Featuring Dr. Finklestein from Tim Burton's stop motion animated feature film The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), he was released as an addition to the already released Jack, Sally and Zero characters. The sculpture is an open edition, not yet retired. "Retired"
means that the molds are destroyed and the sculptures are no longer
produced, which makes them (rare) collectors items. Titled Unhinged,
the sculpture of Finklestein features him as he looked in the film, sitting in his wheelchair. It's difficult to see all the details, but the design of the chair is quite remarkable. Finklestein is dressed in white with long black gloves, and he has purple lips and ears. He is "plussed"
(non-porcelain materials are used) with
a brass hinge that allows his head to open and reveal his brain. His
black glasses are made of bronze, and his wheelchair is plussed with
bronze and pewter parts. Some of the details I like, are the brown
metal pieces that support his feet, the black metal pieces that wrap
around the chair toward the back, and the stitching in the fabric of
the chair. The base is brown and resembles wood floors.*IMPORTANT~This
sculpture is NOT in mint condition. There is some "crazing" (network
of fine cracks in a surface or glaze of a surface) on some of the white areas of Finklestein (coat, legs, and toward rear of his head), and the base (underneath) of the sculpture. The
crazing cannot be seen right away, but only if you look very closely. *Please don't bid
on this item if you want one in mint condition. The following is an explanation of crazing. For
additional information, Google "crazing."
Delayed
crazing shows up weeks, months, or years later and is practically
always caused by underfiring. If ware is underfired (does not reach
maturity), it can, in time, expand when moisture fills the pores
causing the body to expand. Sudden changes in temperature can cause
crazing if the body and glaze do not expand or contract uniformly.
Either the body expanding or the glaze shrinking can cause fine
hairline cracking (crazing) to occur.The
sculpture measures about 6" tall, 4 1/2" deep (front to back), and 3 5/8" wide (left to right). The bottom of the
sculpture reads:Walt Disney Classics Collection (logo)Tim Burton'sThe NightmareBefore ChristmasUnhingedDr. Finklestein©TouchstoneImprinted in the bottom of the sculpture is the Sombrero production mark
(understamp) for 2002, a symbol representing Disney's Saludos Amigos (1943).
As you may know,
many collectible brands have an understamp pressed into or printed on
the collectible to show what year the item was manufactured. This sculpture has been seen with production marks from 2002-2004.The
sculpture is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity (see photo) enclosed in a clear plastic envelope, which is sealed on the
back with a gold "Walt Disney Classics Collection" logo sticker. The
back of the certificate usually reads this, or something similar:This
beautifully crafted sculpture was developed through the collaborative efforts of the
animators and other artists of The Walt Disney Studios, using the same
principles applied to classic Disney animation. In concept and
execution, this is an authentic three-dimensional representation of the
original animated film scene, capturing the timeless spirit and beauty
of Walt Disney's classic films in every detail. The
sculpture has remained in its box since purchased in 2002. The box has its original packing materials and is in great condition. The suggested retail price is $175. This is my only Finklestein for sale!Payment is accepted through PayPal only (please CONFIRM addresses). *Insurance is included in this free shipping offer! No international bidders for this auction, please! Large items have a surcharge for box size, plus the added distance from Hawaii, plus weight. An item this size and weight runs about $34 from Hawaii! Majority
of my items are from my personal collection. I finally got some new
showcases but I've decided to part with some items because either space
is limited or I've outgrown some of them. I would really like to
find new homes for my collectibles where they'll be appreciated! Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
