US Navy Squadron Patch VPU-1 Old Buzzards P-3 Orion
This piece measures 4 1/2" from top to bottom an is unused. Patrol Squadron Special Projects Unit (VPU) 1 was established on 01 July 1982, and was redesignated to Special Projects Patrol Squadron (VPU) 1 on 08 April 1998. VPU-1 has its homebase at NAS Brunswick, Maine. The squadron started in 1969 as a detachment of VP-26, becoming a permanent detachment in 1979. VPU-1, began as project Saffire assigned to Commander, Patrol Wing Five (CPW-5), and used flight crew members from VP-8 from 1969 to 1975. It transferred to VP-26 Octover of 1975. It exists with a fleet of 2 or 3 Orions, and in 1984 VPU-1 received a "Meritorious Unit Commendation". Please ask questions if you have them and I'll do my best.
