JUST A FEW HELPFUL TIPS always remember If in doubt, leave it alone and take to a professional jeweler To clean or not to clean vintage jewelry? Clean jewelry looks better and has more appeal. Vintage jewelry, however, can be fragile, and some materials can be damaged unless cleaned by an expert. Never use acidic or abrasive cleaners. Never put rhinestones, simulated pearls, plastics, gold- or silver-plated metals or enamel in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaning machine. Old plastics can react to chemicals by turning cloudy or deteriorating, so use water only. Cleaning solutions made especially for delicate jewelry and a baby's toothbrush will remove everyday dust and grime from metals and stones. Rubbing alcohol will remove makeup and body oils. Pearls should always be put on last after you have done your hair, makeup, lotion etc. the chemicals can effect the natural beauty and luster of a pearl and can cause weakness to the material used to string the pearls together into a strand of jewelry. Have it checked for weakness. Watches- even though they may be water proof or water resistant the rubber seals inside can become dry over time and allow water to leak in to the works. Also leaving a dead battery inside a watch can cause damage to the works. So if you own a nicer timepiece it is worth having it serviced by the manufacture or company. Some people don't realize that some of the manufactures of nicer products offer repair services, or other options for just the cost of you paying postage both ways. So it's worth a few minutes of your time to investigating and contacting a customer service rep. before tossing that watch, necklace or whatever it may be. Personal experience: I love timepieces always have, I have on 3 different occasions with 3 different manufactures returned watches that stopped working for one reason or another and pay shipping and or a small service fee to have a part replaced or the item replaced by a new one of equal or better value. So give it a try. Silver- to help keep it from tarnishing try wiping it clean of body oils after wearing, placing it in a dry place or bag and a little secret add those little silica-gel, moisture absorbant packets you get in bags or some medications that you usually toss in the garbbage. These will help keep the silver from tarnishing so fast. I personally keep them in with all my jewelry and watches. Please keep gel packets away from children. There are some more excellent guides on ebay about cleaning old jewelry. If in doubt, leave it alone and take to a professional jeweler.
