In spray tanning, a tanning solution is applied by a technician using an airbrush or a spray gun (turbine systems) or, automatically by a spray tan booth. The tanning solution contains an active ingredient, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that reacts with the outer layer of skin, producing a golden brown color. The pigments resulting from a spray tan DO NOT provide UV protection. With most solutions the maximum generation of color is reached within about 12 hours, so the color will continue to darken after the initial application. Tanning solutions also typically have a bronzer that provides an immediate tan effect. Solutions that include instant bronzing are popular with most clients. Most of this added bronzer will come off in the first shower/bath after application. The color that remains is produced by DHA reacting with the skin. 2. What is DHA and how does it give me a tan? DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is a clear liquid applied to the body using an airbrush. DHA has been approved by the FDA for over 30 years for cosmetic applications, reacts with the amino acids in the outer layer of the skin. This tan lasts approximately 5 to 10 days depending on your life style and skin type. With follow-up applications, you can maintain your tan indefinitely. Also, use moisturizer on your skin daily to help keep you and your tan looking healthy. DHA works by interacting with the dead surface cells found in the outermost layer of the skin, producing color changes. As the dead skin cells naturally wear off, the color gradually fades, just like a genuine suntan. 3. What is the difference between traditional airbrush equipment and HVLP? Traditional airbrush equipment has a smaller spray gun, pressure tank, and demands more time and labor to apply a perfect airbrush tan. HVLP equipment, or High Volume, Low Pressure systems are designed to produce a wider spray zone, offering an easier and more natural looking application.
